It seems fitting that Lagoa, which translates to “lagoon”, should receive the “Most Blue Municipality in the Algarve”, an accolade that highlights its ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and environmental awareness within the community.
The distinction was presented at the 9th National Blue Flag Seminar held in Mértola earlier in November, and recognises Lagoa's drive to promote environmentally responsible practices and foster a deeper connection with nature.
Examples of its proactive approach to environmental education include initiatives such as exploratory trails, workshops and environmental performances designed to engage both residents and visitors, as well as awareness campaigns and activities like beach cleanups.
“Seeing our municipality recognised as the ‘Most Blue Municipality in the Algarve’ fills us with immense pride,” said Luís Encarnação, President of Lagoa’s City Council. “This award reflects the continuous work and commitment of the municipality in promoting sustainability and respecting our natural heritage.”
Adding to this honour, Praia Grande in Ferragudo was awarded the International Certificate of the 10 years with the Blue Flag Programme. This certificate celebrates a decade of dedication to upholding high standards of environmental quality, safety, services and environmental education, and which Lagoa President calls “a testament to our collective efforts to ensure clean, safe, and ecologically responsible beaches”.
Already famous for being home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, the dual achievements cement Lagoa’s reputation as a leader in environmental management and sustainable policy development.
This unique blend of natural beauty and thoughtful living makes the towns of Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Porches, Estômbar and Parchal highly appealing for their lifestyle and quality of life for residents and visitors alike, all year round.
