Tourists from the United Kingdom spent about 700,000 overnight stays at the Algarve hotel industry in October, a 4 percent increase over the same month last year, according to the National Statistics Institute. The results of the tourist activity also show that the main tourist market for the Algarve region accumulated about 5.6 million overnight stays between January and October 2019, 2.3 percent more than in the same period of 2018.

As for guests, the destination hotel business registered 136,000 UK guests in October (+ 7.1 percent) and accumulated 1.1 million guests (+ 7 percent) from that market since the beginning of the year.

In the light of these results, the president of the Algarve Tourism Region, João Fernandes, states: “These results make us optimistic about the future, notably the recovery that the UK market has been experiencing throughout the year, both at the hotel and Faro airport, where it is rising 6.5 percent. Another positive sign is the recovery of the pound against the euro, which has been taking place since mid-August of this year, and which has been encouraging as the election date for the British parliament approaches.

Adding overnight stays from all markets, Algarve hotels recorded 1.9 million overnight stays in October (-0.6 percent) and accumulated 19.6 million (+ 2.2 percent) since January. In the total number of guests, the monthly registration of the region is 462 thousand guests (+ 0.4 percent) and the accumulated value is 4.7 million (+ 7.2 percent).

Regional hotel revenues continued to rise, amounting to 96.6 million Euros (+ 1.7 percent) in October and accumulating 1168.3 million Euros (+ 7 percent) in the first ten months of the year, up from compared to the year 2018 (EUR 1136.6 million).
