Visitors from France, Ireland and Portugal are helping to boost the number of tourists in the Algarve, showing that the region is becoming attractive to those from the non-traditional markets of the UK and Holland.

According to data from the Portuguese National Institute for Statistics (INE), the number of overnight stays for British and Dutch visitors fell during the month of May, however marked increases from Portuguese, French and Irish visitors helped to even out the numbers which were at a similar level to those recorded in 2017.

Overall there were 1.8 million overnight stays in the Algarve during May, with the results showing that around nine out of the ten overnight stays were by foreign visitors.  While the British numbers were down by -11.2% for the month, they still remain the primary market for tourists to the Algarve, with German and Irish visitors.

The statistics showed the changing patterns of tourism in the Algarve with the month registering an increase of 11.2% for Portuguese visitors, an increase of 4.2% for German visitors, a rise of 9.9% in Irish tourists and French overnight stays were up by an impressive 24.1%.

The Algarve Tourism Board (RTA) stated that the biggest decreases came from British visitors at -11.2% and Dutch tourists were down by -12.1% in total for May 2018.

The number of visitors may be leveling out in comparison to previous years, however the revenue coming in from these guests has been increasing. The INE data found that revenue for hotel units rose overall by 7.1% during the month, representing a total of 94.6 million euros.

The Algarve continues to go from strength to strength in the tourism sector, with the opportunities to benefit from renting out a property for holiday lets, helping to offer property owners a significant return on their investment.
