Almost 800 million euros in revenue came into the Algarve during the first eight months of the year, putting the region on track to having the best year ever since records began.

According to information released by the Portuguese National Institute for Statistics (INE), there were more than three million over-night stays in the Algarve during August alone and this accounted for some 40% of the total number of tourists in Portugal during the month – cementing the Algarve as the top region of the country for holidays in August.

When looking at the year from January to August 2018, the number of tourists staying in the Algarve region was up by a massive 13.5 million, “far above the results in other regions” according to the Algarve Tourism Board (RTA).

Hotels alone saw an increase of 610 thousand registered guests (up by 2.1%) and their revenue was up by 227 million euros (+ 3.2%).

Spending overall by tourists from Portugal in August was up by 9.1 percent during the month when compared to the same period in 2017 while spending from foreign tourists was down by 7.2%, this spending includes revenue taken by local lodgings as well as established hotels in the Algarve.

During August the average income per room available (RevPAR) in the Algarve registered its highest level to date at 129.30 euros, above the national average of 90.20 euros.

Responding to the results, the president of the RTA, João Fernandes said: “We welcome the success of tourism in the Algarve, which continues to remain the preferred holiday destination for both Portuguese visitors and foreign tourists who visit our country.  The results consolidate a trend of growth in the sector that helps to bring more added value to the region as a whole.”

While the Algarve is a hugely popular destination during the summer months, the tourism authorities are currently working on new plans to help combat the seasonality of the region through a number of initiatives including events, promotions and offers.
